PE and School Sport

PE at Wilberfoss: The Big Picture!

At Wilberfoss, children will become physically literate and confident in a range of skills. They will be inspired to compete in a range of games and sports where they will demonstrate the importance of sportsmanship and respect for others. Pupils will develop a love of sport and will learn to lead healthy, active lives. Through sport, children will learn leadership skills and be able to apply these across the curriculum. Children will be encouraged to develop their love of sport through a wide range of in school clubs and signposting to external opportunities.

Intent

At Wilberfoss, we recognise the value and importance of Physical Education and School Sports and its role in improving pupil wellbeing. PE and sport provision at Wilberfoss is designed to not only meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage and National Curriculum but is also ambitious and aspires to offer opportunities beyond it. We aim to develop a fun, high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sports and other physically demanding activities.

It is our intention to build a curriculum that enables children to develop knowledge, skills, and vocabulary in a broad range of sporting activities, as well as developing values and transferrable life skills. We have also ensured that our curriculum has our school’s vision and values at its heart:

  • Achieve and shine – Children are actively involved in sports day, dance showcase, intra- and inter-school competition, leading during lessons and as playleaders in KS2.
  • Live well together - We celebrate diversity through talking about inspirational sporting stars and celebrating events such as the commonwealth games and the Paralympic and Olympic games.
  • Grow good people – Perseverance and sportsmanship is key. We are frequently complemented when attending competitions and events about how our children demonstrate this and the school games values. We ensure children have a good understanding and demonstrate sportsmanship during PE lessons and during wider opportunities for physical activities on the playground to throughout PE lessons.

Through intra and inter-school competitions and celebrating pupils’ achievements outside of school, we aim to continue to raise the profile of PE. Our PE curriculum has been developed with a clear progression structure in mind from Foundation Stage to Year 6. This progression of skills and knowledge, both declarative and procedural, has been planned to build on the skills needed to meet the Early Learning Goal and end of Key Stage objectives in the National Curriculum. In addition, an essential element of our PE and School Sport curriculum demonstrates the need for leading healthy, physically active lifestyles.

Implementation

Physical development is high priority from the Early Years. In EYFS, a range of opportunities are provided during adult led PE sessions and throughout continuous provision to enable children to be confident and coordinated moving in both gross and fine motor skills. Children in EYFS from F1 are given opportunities to compete in whole school intraschool competitions. In EYFS, observation and monitoring by skilled practitioners ensures that all children are being challenged and equally effective intervention is put in place where necessary.

From Key Stage 1, each class has access to two hours of high-quality curriculum PE per week. Lessons are designed by Complete PE, a thorough and robust scheme of work endorsed by the Youth Sport Trust. Complete PE is used to aid teaching staff in their subject knowledge and planning of PE. Teachers adjust and change lessons to suit the needs of their classes, but the scheme provides a strong basis of what is expected in each year group. Lessons are well paced, skill focused and appropriately challenging for all learners. Each lesson, children are given the opportunity to practice skills in a variety of ways and each lesson builds upon the previous skills, allowing them time to embed it. Different skills and vocabulary are introduced and recapped throughout, and across, the years, each time they are being built upon; allowing children to know more and remember more.

In Key Stage 1, fundamental movement skills continue to be a focus and developed further from EYFS. This ensures that children are competent and confident in performing a range of physical activities and sports. Gymnastics, dance, team building and games units are also introduced in Key Stage 1.

In Key Stage 2, the curriculum is designed to enable children to develop the skills to begin to learn to lead, coach and umpire when they leave KS2. The curriculum is regularly refreshed in response to pupil voice and needs of the children to ensure it is relevant to our current pupils. We ensure that the curriculum is aligned closely to the competition calendar for the East Riding School Sport Partnership (West). This has led to a progressive and effective competition pathway, with skills and basic principles of competition taught in lessons, allowing all children to participate in intra school competition, which opens the pathway to selection for inter school competition. In Year 3, children have access to swimming lessons with the aim that all children will be able to competently swim a distance of 25m, use a range of strokes and be able to use self-safe rescue.

Adults across the school act as role models for P.E. by ensuring that children have access to good quality equipment, recognising and rewarding children for development during activities, wearing sports clothing for P.E. and volunteering to take children to extra-curricular festivals and competitions, as well as sports activities off-site.

To continue to highlight the importance of healthy lifestyles, children learn through PE and across the wider school curriculum about the impact of healthy diet, exercise and mental health. We also ensure that children have opportunities to be physically active throughout the day by engaging active lessons, gardening, having free access to active play equipment, a large field, trim trail and climbing equipment. In addition, a range of extra-curricular clubs are offered.

Impact

At Wilberfoss Primary School, children make good progress in Physical Education from Foundation Stage to Key Stage 2. Our children are eager to attend after school clubs and competitive sports events at local and county level. All children understand the values and importance of fair play and being a good sportsperson. Our pupils are a credit to the school at inter-school events - their positive attitudes, sportsmanship, competitiveness, resilience and teamwork are always complimented.

We ensure that our PE curriculum is inclusive and progressive and allows all children the opportunity to acquire and develop fundamental knowledge, understanding, skills and techniques and apply these to a wide variety of different sports and activities. PE lessons are fun, enjoyable and challenging and all children can achieve, to the best of their ability, in a supportive, safe and stimulating environment. Pupil Premium and children with SEND make progress in line with their peers – everyone can achieve and shine.

Assessment of skills is conducted lesson by lesson, in line with PE national curriculum. The Complete PE scheme has clear success criteria for each lesson enabling staff to identify acquired skills and plan for next steps in learning. Children are encouraged to peer assess, offering constructive feedback which deepens their understanding each lesson. They are also actively encouraged to reflect on their own learning. Through the subject leader drawing together assessments, pupil voice, evidence gathered from learning walks and photographic evidence enables to impact of the curriculum to be ongoingly assessed.

We aspire for all children to enjoy PE and develop a love of sport and physical activity, which hopefully becomes part of their future life outside of Primary School.

More information can be found about Sports Premium in the Statutory Information section of the website.

WE are gold again!

For the 4th year running, we have been officially awarded the Gold School Games Mark.

The School Games Mark is a Government-led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community, and we are delighted to have been recognised for our success. We are extremely proud of our pupils for their dedication to all aspects of school sport, including those young volunteers, leaders and officials who made our competitions possible. As part of our application, we were asked to fulfil criteria in the areas of participation, competition, workforce and clubs, and we are pleased that the hard work of everyone at our school has been rewarded this year.
